Celebrate Diversity and Coalition in July with the Afro-Latino Festival NYC!
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
New York, NY May 20, 2016 – The Afro-Latino Festival NYC is back July 8-10th weekend for its 4th annual celebration of African, Latin-American and Caribbean cultures through food, art, and music. The festival will begin in Harlem on July 8th and conclude in Bed-Stuy July 9 and10th.
The Afro-Latino Festival will have a lineup of incredible artists including Tito Puente Jr., El CaribeFunk, Afrodisiaco, and late night music with DJ Ritmo Equis, DJ Big Nito, DJ Madame Vacile and more.
The Afro-Latino Festival brings together artists, scholars, and performers to educate and affirm the African and Latino people. Latinos of African descent are commonly seen as two mutually exclusive races, but there is a rich heritage in the union of their cultures and the Afro-Latino Festival presents an opportunity educate, network, and bring awareness to this intermixture with film screenings, Afro-Latin talks, art installations, vendor markets, food trucks and more. Mai-Elka Prado, who founded the Festival, originally created it with the idea of engaging and empowering Afro-Latinos.
“We look at Afro-Latinos as a coalition community,” said Prado. “We have a lot of unique issues from lack of representation in the media to profiling to immigration. We want the festival to be a place where people can be seen and heard, in an authentic way. Our concerns— whether it is our cultural heritage, our economic situation, or political issues— are all fundamental and deserve a platform.”

About Afro-Latino Festival
The Afro-Latino Festival NYC is a weekend event celebrating the contributions of Afro-Latinos through artistic showcases, networking, cultural exchange, culinary presentations, and education. It serves as an important opportunity for organizations working within Afro-latino communities to raise social awareness and highlight their work.
Our mission is to provide a networking space to pay tribute to the African roots of people from Latin America and the Caribbean. The festival commemorates The International Decade for People of African Descent declared by the United Nations (2015-2024) and its principle of justice, recognition, and development.
